2-Phase Course (WAB Course)

New regulations regarding the 2-phase course / WAB course:

According to the decision of the Swiss Federal Council dated 14 December 2018, the following changes apply to the 2-phase driver training program:

  • From 01 January 2020, new drivers are required to attend only one course day (7 hours).
  • New drivers who passed their driving test on or after 01 January 2020 must complete the 2-phase course within 12 months after successfully passing the driving test.
  • Normally, participants attend the course with their own car. It makes no difference whether the vehicle has a manual or automatic transmission.

What does the 2-phase training include?

The 2-phase training continues the basic driver education of new drivers after they have passed the driving test. The aim is to help participants reflect on their first practical driving experiences and to review their own behavior in road traffic. This takes place during a one-day advanced training course (7 hours). The 2-phase course must be completed within the first 12 months after passing the driving test. A valid driving license or a valid driving permit is required to participate in the 2-phase course.

If the driving license is withdrawn, the probation period is extended by one year. If the license is withdrawn a second time, the driving entitlement is cancelled. Anyone who wishes to drive motor vehicles again after this must submit a new application for a learner’s permit. In addition to the usual documents, a traffic psychology assessment from an officially recognized authority must be provided. This assessment must confirm driving aptitude and must not be older than three months. A new learner’s permit can be issued no earlier than one year after the offense was committed. Category A1 is not subject to this regulation.

After successfully completing the course, the course provider issues a course certificate, which is required to obtain a permanent (unlimited) driving license.
