The Path to a Category B (Car) Driver's License in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

To obtain a learner's permit, please proceed as follows:

Download the application form and complete it.

Have an eye test performed by an optician or ophthalmologist. (An official ID such as an identity card, passport, or residence permit must be presented before the test.) Eyeglass prescriptions are not accepted as an eye test.

Please contact the Motor Vehicle Licensing Office of Basel-Stadt, Clarastrasse 38. They will accept:

1. the fully completed application form,
2. two color passport photos (min. 35 x 45 mm, max. 45 x 60 mm, no profile shots, no head covering, no computer printouts, no older than one year),
3. the eye test certificate (no older than one year),
4. the original, valid first aid certificate (no older than six years). The first aid course should be completed first!

After reviewing your documents, we will send you an admission permit and registration card for the basic theory test, which we will send you no earlier than two months before you reach the minimum age. If you have already reached the minimum age when you apply, please allow several days for processing. The learner's permit will be sent by mail within 10 business days of successfully passing the basic theory test. After reviewing your documents, the Motor Vehicle Licensing Office will send you an admission permit and registration card for the basic theory test.

Then you prepare for the basic theory test.

The learner's permit will be sent approximately 10 days after passing the test.

Now you are authorized to take driving lessons and complete the mandatory traffic awareness course (VKU).
